This year, for Christmas, I decided to make each of the grandbabies a quilt of their own…a special keepsake…a lasting legacy. I know that they won’t understand the importance of handmade things from the older generation for a long time, but as they age and look back on a quilt that was made especially for them and covered in prayer, hopefully they will value all that is in it.
Each of their quilts are created entirely by hand, one stitch at a time. Many people have told me, “you know, they make machines for that”, and while I know that a sewing machine would make it easier, and certainly faster, I think there is great value in hand made things. I remember all of the things that my grandmother made for me…clothes, costumes, and dolls. I also remember not treasuring them as much then, but now that I’m older, it resonates deep in my heart. My hope is that they will remember, long after I am gone, the depth of my love for them through the time and stitches spent.
Something else that I hope that they will remember is that I prayed for them. I prayed for them before they were born…for the gift of their lives to their parents. I’ve prayed for them since they were born…for their health, safety, and enjoyment of life. I’ve prayed for their future…that God would guide each and every step of their lives and that they would walk in the calling that He designed for them. I’ve prayed for their faith, that they would have a deeply personal relationship with Jesus, and that they would always know His love for them.
That’s a lot to ask of a quilt, I suppose, but this Grandma/Mimi hopes that all of the above legacy will live long in their hearts.
